Keith Richards has been left “devastated” following the death of his former lover Anita Pallenberg who died aged 73 last night.
The Rolling Stones guitarist, 73, dated Anita for 12 years from 1967 and they had three kids together.
She also dated the band’s founding member Brian Jones and was believed to have had a fling with Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
Last night Anita’s close friend Stella Schnabel posted a picture of them together and captioned it: “I have never met a woman quite like you Anita.
“I don’t think there is anybody in this universe like you. No one has ever understood me so well.
“You showed about life and myself and how to grow and become and exist with it all. I was a little girl thinking I was big but I became a woman through knowing you.
“The secret lyrical you. My best friend… The greatest woman I have ever known.
“Thank you for the most important lessons – because they are ever changing and definitive like you. We are all singing for you. How you liked it.”
She finished: “Go in peace my Roman mother, you will always be in my heart.”
Anita was the rock band’s muse and dated Brian before she embarked on a relationship with Keith. They went on to have three children together.
In Keith’s biography Life, he says that she also had a fling with Mick.
Anita met the band at a Stones concert in 1965 in Munich. After finding herself backstage she offered the Stones some hash and Brian invited her to his hotel room afterwards.
They stayed together for two years but he became increasingly abusive.
On holiday in Morocco in 1967, Keith saw Brian beating Anita up and grabbed her, threw her in his car and took her back to England – after that she lived with Keith.
She previously said life with the Stones was initially fun, sharing: “I’ve always loved the blues and Brian especially was a real blues man. It was more than just pop. I thought they were great, you know.
“In those days. Now I’m not so sure! Somebody like Keith, he’s got a future because he can sit up like a blues man until he’s 90, he can just strum his guitar and sing his songs and people will always listen; but all this pop stuff. I’m not really interested.”
Anita kickstarted her film career in the late 1960s. While filming Performance, released in 1970, she started using heroin while she was filming Performance.
When the Stones moved to France as tax exiles, there were endless drugs busts and in 1977 Keith was arrested in Toronto with heroin on him. Instead of going to prison he and Anita checked into rehab.
